13/11/2024YouTube has introduced a new generative AI feature in its latest weekly update, along with a live-stream notification addition to the Shorts feed.
To start, YouTube is expanding its generative AI music initiative. The “Dream Track” experiment now offers an AI remix option for selected tracks.
“If you’re a creator in the experiment group, you can select an eligible song, describe how you want to restyle it, then generate a unique 30-second soundtrack to use in your Short. For example, if you want to give a song a different genre or mood, you simply enter your vision into the ‘Restyle a track’ prompt and you’ll soon have a customized soundtrack that reimagines the music while maintaining the essence of the original song’s vocals and lyrics.” This development is part of YouTube’s ongoing efforts to broaden music integration in collaboration with musicians and publishers, which is why the remix option is limited to select tracks. However, it could unlock new possibilities for artists by allowing unique variations of their songs, while still crediting the original creators. An endless variety of remixes could attract more listeners, potentially making music a more engaging and interactive feature within the app.
YouTube notes that this new experiment is currently limited to “a small group of creators,” though the Dream Track feature itself became accessible to all U.S. creators last month.
Additionally, YouTube is introducing a feature allowing creators who share both Shorts and live streams to add reminders for upcoming live streams directly within the Shorts feed.
I use “include” instead of “add” or “share” in this context because creators have limited control over how posts appear here. “To ensure that this stream reminder option appears on your Shorts, just schedule a stream and Shorts viewers will see a reminder option within 24hrs of a stream starting. We hope this helps Shorts viewers join in on even more of your upcoming live streams.”
Now, if you have a live stream scheduled, viewers of your Shorts will see a reminder option one day before the stream. This could be an effective way to boost awareness of your broader YouTube presence, and with the popularity of Shorts, it might help attract significantly more viewers to your broadcasts.
Lastly, YouTube has also issued another update regarding its plan to automatically convert all video uploads of three minutes or less into Shorts. Last month, YouTube announced that all videos 3 minutes or shorter would soon be eligible to appear in the Shorts feed. However, the platform has since provided several clarifications on what this means in practice.
Here’s the breakdown:
– Vertical videos between 1 and 3 minutes long, uploaded to YouTube, will not be eligible for the Shorts feed and will not be labeled as Shorts.
– Videos of 3 minutes or less uploaded after this date will be listed as Shorts and eligible to appear in the Shorts stream.
YouTube is currently in the process of implementing this change, so not all creators will see the conversion yet, which has caused some confusion. However, this is the current guideline from YouTube, and if you haven’t noticed it on your channel yet, it should be rolling out soon.
In addition, YouTube expects the full Shorts conversion to be completed platform-wide by early next month. While these updates aren’t exactly “game changers,” they do hold relative value and importance for some creators.
