BeReal Faces User Growth Challenges Amid Funding Shortfall

25/03/2024Meta has advanced its decentralized social experiment by enabling Threads users over 18 years old in the U.S., Canada, or Japan to share their threads posts with ActivityPub-compliant servers.
As you can see in the above example, this expanded integration allows more Threads users to showcase their content in other decentralized social apps like Mastodon and WordPress. Users of these services can now engage with Threads posts by following, liking, and replying, without requiring a Threads account. However, there are some limitations, such as regional restrictions and the inability to see likes or replies from people in the Fediverse on Threads.
Certain types of posts and content are not yet federated, including posts with restricted replies, replies to non-federated posts, posts with polls, and reposts of non-federated posts.
Additionally, quote posts and posts containing links have specific limitations within ActivityPub protocols. While this new feature provides broader content-sharing options aligned with Threads and ActivityPub, it comes with some restrictions. Eligible users can enable “Fediverse Sharing” within their Threads settings, accompanied by an explanation of what the Fediverse is and how it works.
Meta’s next step is to integrate into the decentralized social media landscape, seen by many as the future of online connection. This shift aims to empower users to maintain control over their data and online experiences. However, resistance from some Fediverse admins, who have vowed to block Meta’s participation, presents a challenge. This opposition is fueled by concerns about Meta’s past actions related to user data control and moderation rules enforcement.
Despite efforts to address concerns and find common ground with Fediverse admins, Meta’s integration faces obstacles. User adoption remains uncertain, as most social media users prioritize convenience over technological nuances. While open web advocates champion the initiative, widespread user adoption may not materialize, potentially limiting the Fediverse’s impact.
Meta’s pursuit of ties to every social media experience, including those opposed to its business model, reflects its strategy to hedge its bets. Whether the Fediverse gains mainstream traction remains uncertain. However, with Threads now connected, Meta is positioned to participate if the Fediverse gains momentum.
