Threads Users Now Have the Option to Activate Fediverse Sharing
25/03/2024Do you remember when BeReal emerged as the hot new social app, championed by a chorus of influencers heralding it as a return to genuine human connection and interaction online? Well, that moment seems to have faded fast.

According to a report by Business Insider, BeReal is now facing a state of uncertainty, with its user growth plateauing and new initiatives, such as a celebrity feed of daily updates, failing to gain momentum. BeReal’s current active user base hovers around 25 million, a significant decline from its peak of 70 million daily active users in 2023. Additionally, its funding is running dangerously low, with no immediate prospects for new sources of capital.
Business Insider stated:
“Leaders of BeReal are now weighing their options as continued growth proves difficult. The company is considering raising a Series C before what’s left of its $90 million in funding runs out. It faces what is said to be relatively tepid investor interest or being acquired, the people familiar told Business Insider.”
Back in 2022, BeReal secured 60 million dollars in Series B funding, valuing the company at 600 million dollars. However, the subsequent downturn has exposed a fundamental flaw: BeReal is merely a feature, not a sustainable platform, lacking a viable path to monetization.
With approximately 10 months of funding left, it’s hardly surprising to witness BeReal’s decline. This narrative reflects the cyclical nature of buzzy platforms in an increasingly competitive market. The rise of Facebook two decades ago serves as a cautionary tale, with investors now eager to latch onto any trending app or tool to avoid missing out on the next big thing.
Conversely, many of these apps, such as Clubhouse, Peach, Vine, and Google+, ultimately faltered due to mismanagement, internal issues, or a misreading of the market. The failure of BeReal app underscores the challenges faced by aspiring challengers in a landscape dominated by entrenched user behaviors.
Yet, while challengers will continue to emerge, BeReal’s trajectory serves as a reminder that sustained success requires more than just hype—it demands genuine appeal and differentiation. It’s doubtful whether BeReal will survive beyond 2025, highlighting the precarious nature of trending apps touted as legitimate contenders without a clear growth strategy.
