26/04/2024Meta is stepping up its investment in AI, aiming to compete with OpenAI and others in the generative AI field.
From now on, users of Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger will gain access to Meta’s advanced generative AI assistant directly from the search bar in each app.

As demonstrated by Instagram head Adam Mosseri, users can now utilize Meta’s AI chat engine to engage in conversational queries within the app.
As stated by Meta:
“Built with Meta Llama 3, Meta AI is one of the world’s leading AI assistants, already on your phone, in your pocket for free. And it’s starting to go global with more features. You can use Meta AI on Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger to get things done, learn, create and connect with the things that matter to you.”
Basically, ChatGPT in Meta’s apps, which will enable you to pose queries to Meta’s advanced AI engine in-stream.
As you can see in the above example, using the new chat option within IG chat, you’ll be able to search the web for relevant info, adding more context to your discussions.
Meta’s new generative AI assistant, powered by Meta Llama 3, will be available globally across its main apps. This feature allows users to accomplish tasks, learn, create, and connect with relevant content and people.
This essentially brings ChatGPT functionality to Meta’s apps, enabling users to interact with Meta’s advanced AI engine within the app. For instance, users can search the web for relevant information directly within Instagram chats.
Although Meta previously introduced a similar AI-based assistant called M bot in 2017, it failed to gain traction and was shut down in 2018 due to low usage. However, Meta believes that its new and improved Llama 3 engine will offer a more valuable and useful experience.
As stated by journalist Casey Newton back at the time:
“It felt like an amazing resource to have at my disposal, and yet in practice I almost never knew what to do with it.”
This new feature may most likely suffer the same fate; thus Meta is sure that with its new, super powered Llama 3 engine driving this new chatbot option, it’ll actually be far more useful this time around.
According to Meta, the new Llama 3 model is “the most intelligent AI assistant that you can freely use. We’re releasing 8B and 70B parameter models – both best-in-class for their size. We’ve got more releases coming to bring multi-modality and longer context windows. We’re also still training a larger dense 400B+ parameter model.”
With releases of 8B and 70B parameter models, Meta is also working on larger models to enhance multi-modality and longer context windows.
Furthermore, the more powerful Llama model will make Meta’s AI chatbot better than ChatGPT, and every other competitor within the AI market, which is why Meta is hoping to get more people using it, while it can also do things like generate visuals in-stream, morphing in real-time as you type.
In addition to in-app functionality, Meta is launching a meta.ai website allowing users to access its AI chatbot on desktop PCs. Meta AI prompts will also be integrated into users’ feeds to help them discover more based on their interests.
While these new generative AI features may offer advanced functionalities, they may not significantly enhance the user experience. Many users may prefer traditional search methods over in-app AI assistants.
Nevertheless, Meta is pushing ahead with its AI initiatives, making its new AI search tools available to users in several countries, including the U.S., Australia, Canada, Ghana, Jamaica, Malawi, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, Singapore, South Africa, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
