19/11/2024Meta Introduces Video Calling Enhancements – Featuring HD Video Calls
24/11/2024WhatsApp has announced that it will be introducing voice message transcripts to all users, offering an additional way to interact with voice messages in the app.
As shown in this example, the new feature will allow you to enable automatic transcripts of voice messages in the app, so you can read the audio notes sent to you.
This could help bridge the gap between those who enjoy sending voice messages and those who prefer not to listen to them, while also ensuring that you can interact with voice messages in any setting, ultimately enhancing accessibility.
WhatsApp states that voice message transcripts will be generated directly on your phone, ensuring that no one, “not even WhatsApp, can listen to or read them.”
While the messages will be converted to text, WhatsApp’s core privacy and security features will remain intact, and the feature will also support multiple languages.
According to TechCrunch:
“On iOS, the languages that are supported depend on your OS. If you have iOS 16+, the supported languages include English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Turkish, Chinese, and Arabic. If you have iOS 17+, the supported languages include Danish, Finish, Malay, Norwegian, Dutch, Swedish, Hebrew, and Thai. If you have an Android, you can access transcripts in English, Portuguese, Spanish, and Russian.”
It could be a useful addition, allowing users to communicate in their preferred style, while giving the recipient the option to decide how they want to engage with the message.
Of course, the automated transcripts may only sometimes be completely accurate. However, based on the performance of automated transcription tools in other social apps, users can usually identify when errors occur, so this shouldn’t be a significant problem.
This is another aspect to consider in your WhatsApp experience.
WhatsApp says that voice message transcripts will be rolling out globally “over the coming weeks”.
