WhatsApp Introduces Calling Enhancements for the Holiday Season

As WhatsApp continues to grow, recently reaching 100 million U.S. users in July, its parent company Meta has been working to add more features to meet the increased demand for its privacy-focused messaging platform.

But it’s not just about text messages anymore. According to Meta, WhatsApp now hosts over 2 billion audio and video calls each day, a significant expansion of its communication capabilities.

Ahead of the holiday season, WhatsApp has rolled out several improvements to its calling features, aiming to help users stay connected during the festive period.

First, WhatsApp now allows you to choose specific participants when starting an audio call from a group chat. Instead of inviting everyone in the group, you can now tick or untick participants to call only the people you want, making it easier to connect with the right individuals.

WhatsApp explains:
“Now, when you start a call from a group chat, you can select specific participants, so you call exactly who you want without disrupting the rest. Ideal for planning surprise parties or presents.”

While this new feature can be useful, it’s important to use it thoughtfully, as it may also cause some people to feel excluded. Nonetheless, it opens up more possibilities for spontaneous connections.

Additionally, WhatsApp has enhanced the quality of its video calls, offering higher-resolution playback for both one-on-one and group chats. New effects, similar to Snapchat filters, have also been added, including fun options like puppy ears for video calls.

WhatsApp is also improving the calling experience on the desktop, making it easier to find everything you need to initiate a call, create a call link, or dial a number directly from the “Calls” tab on the desktop app.

These updates are set to enhance the user experience, especially as more people turn to WhatsApp for communication during the holidays and beyond.
