The sound? Well, it’s like the noise you’d make hitting a curb on a skateboard in Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater or the repetitive click of an error message on your computer. According to Instagram, though, this audio snippet perfectly captures the essence of the platform in just a few beats.
So, what exactly is a “signature sound”?
In short, it’s both nothing and everything—it doesn’t serve any functional purpose or convey specific meaning. Instead, it acts as a branding element for Instagram, aiming to create a recognizable audio identity for the app.
Why this particular sound?
Instagram says it’s part of their broader effort to establish a new “sonic identity”:
“From mild to wild, our Creative Audio and Brand teams designed, iterated, and tested a variety of different sounds to land the right vibe: a simple and iconic sound that’s designed to fit with every Reel.”
The team conducted extensive tests, evaluating different sounds based on their emotional resonance.
“We brought a vibe where we intentionally wanted it to be punctuated, but imperfect. A metaphor for everyday creativity that doesn’t have to be perfect to be shared.”
While using the phrase “brought a vibe” might not instill confidence in some, Instagram insists this sound encapsulates the overall feeling of Reels.
So, next time you download a Reel and hear this signature sound, that’s what it is. It may not have the appeal of TikTok’s bass drop and lift, but it’ll catch your attention. Mostly because, at first, you might think your phone is malfunctioning—but hey, attention is attention!
