07/04/2024Snapchat is introducing a range of new features aimed at enhancing creativity and collaboration within the app, offering users more ways to connect and express themselves. While these updates may not represent revolutionary changes to Snapchat engagement, they introduce some intriguing tools that could shape future in-app experiences.
One notable addition is the rollout of new AI-powered Lenses, which empower users with enhanced editing and customization capabilities for their visuals. These Lenses leverage advanced AI technology to transform images based on various themes, opening up a realm of creative possibilities.
According to Snapchat:
“Lenses have long been a part of our everyday camera experience and new AI lenses are introducing limitless possibilities. We’ve added a new advanced AI-powered Lens that lets you drop into a festive theme with just a tap, and look out for more themes and styles coming soon.”
This integration of generative AI builds upon Snap’s existing features like the “My AI” chatbot and the “Dreams” AI element, albeit in a more seamlessly integrated manner within the regular Snap experience.
Considering that approximately 300 million Snapchatters engage with augmented reality (AR) content on a daily basis, there’s considerable scope for Snap to leverage AI in a manner that enhances user engagement and creativity.
In addition to AI-powered Lenses, Snapchat is introducing new “Templates” that simplify the creation of highlight videos using shared Memories.
Snapchat is also extending its video length limits, allowing users to create longer videos (up to three minutes) and upload longer videos (up to five minutes) for Chats, Stories, and Spotlight. This expansion, particularly significant for Spotlight, which previously had a 60-second limit, provides users with greater flexibility in sharing longer-form content within the app.
Furthermore, Snapchat is enhancing user accessibility by updating its user interface to ensure easier access to the Snap camera throughout the app.
For Snapchat+ subscribers, additional updates include the ability to create combined avatar displays in Friendship Profiles and more realistic Bitmoji representations of pets. Users can upload a photo of their pet through Snap Map, and an AI tool will generate a unique avatar that accompanies them on the map. While this feature may seem gimmicky to some, it adds a personal touch for users who want to reflect their real-life pets in their Snapchat experience.
