SEO vs GEO: What PR Pros Must Know About Modern Search

The search landscape is undergoing its biggest shift in decades. For years, SEO has shaped how brands appear in traditional search results. But with the rise of generative AI—ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, and conversational search—another discipline has emerged: GEO, or Generative Engine Optimization.

While SEO and GEO may look similar on the surface, their priorities and mechanisms differ in ways that directly impact public relations. SEO rewards relevance, authority, and technical structure. GEO, however, rewards credibility, consistency, and trustworthy brand signals across the entire digital ecosystem—from media coverage to social presence to forums and reviews.

For PR professionals, this shift introduces new opportunities. Earned media is no longer only for human audiences; now it trains AI systems to understand which brands deserve to be cited, surfaced, and trusted.

Below is a deep dive into how SEO compares to GEO and why this evolution matters for today’s communicators.

Reputation Is the New Ranking

In a world where AI tools summarize the web instead of listing links, brands are discovered through “answer engines,” not just search engines. This makes PR-generated credibility more influential than ever.

Every media mention—whether an interview, a review, or a quote—acts as a reputation signal that generative engines can use to evaluate trust. GEO relies heavily on:

• Entity consistency: stable brand naming, expert citations, accurate data

• Reputation signals: appearances in authoritative publications

• Cross-web credibility: informed discussions, reviews, and references

When AI models gather information, they look not only for keywords but for patterns of credibility. A single high-quality article can influence both human perception and machine interpretation.

In this context, PR professionals play a central role. They are no longer only storytellers—they are builders of the signals that help AI recognize authority. GEO magnifies this responsibility: strong earned media directly improves the odds of being included, quoted, or referenced in generative answers.

Why Traditional SEO Still Matters

Despite the rise of generative search, SEO is far from obsolete. In fact, traditional SEO remains the foundation of GEO success.

Industry data shows that AI-driven search currently accounts for only about 3% of overall web traffic. And according to Ahrefs’ analysis of nearly two million Google AI Overview citations, 76% of cited content already ranks in the top 10 search results. This indicates a strong integration between classic ranking signals and generative answer selection.

However, this overlap drops to 11% in standalone AI chatbots, which rely more on entity-level trust and cross-web signals than on traditional rankings.

This creates a dual reality:

1. Brands still need SEO fundamentals—technical optimization, authority, and long-form relevance.

2. GEO introduces new expectations around clarity, sourcing, and multi-intent coverage.

Together, SEO and GEO form a hybrid visibility strategy: one influences search rankings; the other influences AI-driven discovery.

The New Unified Approach: SEO + GEO

Success in the AI era requires merging owned content, earned media, and social presence into one cohesive digital footprint. AI models rely on patterns, and every consistent brand signal strengthens their interpretation of your authority.

This is where PR gains renewed power.

Earned storytelling—quotes, interviews, expert commentary, reviews—directly contributes to GEO signals. At the same time, optimized content continues to support SEO.

To leverage both, organizations need a coordinated strategy across PR, content, and social teams. Consistency, credibility, and clarity matter more than ever, especially as AI begins to monetize search experiences and reshape user behavior.

What This Means for PR Professionals

Generative engines reward brands with strong reputations built across many touchpoints—not just websites. This puts PR at the center of modern search visibility.

A few areas where PR directly influences GEO success include:

• High-quality earned media

• Accurate expert quotes and first-party data

• Consistent brand naming and language

• Presence on reputable third-party sites, forums, and reviews

• Credible social proof

Each mention strengthens how AI models understand your brand and improves the probability of inclusion in AI-generated answers.

In other words:
Earned media is now part of search optimization—not just reputation building.

Conclusion: A New Search Era Led by PR

SEO and GEO aren’t competing disciplines—they’re complementary. SEO ensures a strong foundation in traditional search. GEO expands visibility into AI-driven answers, conversational engines, and voice search.

As generative search evolves, PR professionals are uniquely positioned to guide brands through this transformation. Their work now shapes the trust signals machines rely on—and the stories people read and share.
