20/09/2024As regulators in various regions consider imposing age limits on social media to protect young users and with Snapchat under scrutiny for its role in facilitating illegal activities, the company has released two studies that highlight its positive impact on teen engagement.
The first study, conducted by The University of Amsterdam, reveals that among adolescent users of major social media platforms, Snapchat is the only one that has a positive effect on well-being.
Ad per the report:
“We found a consistent negative impact on time spent on TikTok, Instagram and YouTube across all three mental health dimensions. Conversely, spending time on Snapchat positively affected friendship closeness and well-being but had no significant impact on self-esteem.”
Snapchat would be pleased with this finding, as it positions itself as a more positive alternative to conventional social media interactions and engagement. Interestingly, the report also indicates that WhatsApp has a more favorable impact than other messaging apps.
It’s important to note that the report is based on feedback from a relatively small sample of 479 participants. However, the findings offer some intriguing insights that could serve as a counterpoint to the ongoing concerns about social media’s effects on teen health.
“Our findings underscore the complex and multifaceted impact of social media on adolescent mental health. While negative effects are prevalent, especially on platforms like TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram, not all social media use seems harmful. This study highlights the urgent need for more nuanced research and targeted interventions that consider specific platforms and the individual experiences of adolescents.”
Snapchat has also highlighted a second report from three Australian mental health organizations, which found that Snapchat use was not linked to the common mental health issues often associated with social apps.
This is a strong endorsement of the app, suggesting that Snapchat’s focus on connecting friends contributes to a more positive user experience. This contrasts with other platforms that emphasize public posting, which may lead to different outcomes.
These findings are clearly positive indicators for Snap’s efforts. Enhanced user experiences can lead to better advertising and marketing opportunities, potentially boosting the platform’s appeal to brands and advertisers.
