YouTube Showcases Upcoming Features for Connected TV
27/12/2024Pinterest Enhances Search with AI-Powered Visual Discovery Features
07/01/2025Meta is experimenting with a new feature on Facebook that allows users to add a note to their Stories, indicating that the selected image hasn’t been edited within the app.
As shown in an example shared by app researcher Radu Oncescu, users can now long-press on any image in their camera roll to post it directly, bypassing the usual editing and enhancement steps.
This option could simplify the posting process for quicker, real-time updates, while also introducing a new “No Edit” tag to the Story frame.
The idea is that this feature could add a layer of authenticity to content by clarifying that the image is unaltered, whether by AI or other tools.
However, users can still edit images using other apps and upload them through Stories. While Meta has mechanisms to detect external edits, they aren’t foolproof and won’t catch every modification. This means that images could still be altered before being uploaded and yet display the “No Edit” tag.
Still, the feature has the potential to build trust, particularly as AI-generated content becomes increasingly prevalent across Meta’s platforms.
The rise of AI poses challenges for online authenticity, making it harder to distinguish whether the content viewed in a feed is real. With social platforms integrating more generative AI tools, a growing share of posts may no longer reflect genuine user experiences—or anything real at all. This undermines the idea of true social interaction on these platforms.
Meta has already introduced labels for AI-generated content and watermarks for images created within its own apps. However, these don’t necessarily apply to images produced with external tools.
While the “No Edit” tag is a promising concept that could help in some cases, it could also be misused to deceive users by showcasing altered images as unedited.
Overall, the introduction of such tags highlights a broader issue: the increasing presence of AI-driven content diluting genuine human connection in social apps. While the “No Edit” feature may add value, it’s clear that the growing reliance on AI content creation tools presents a significant challenge for maintaining authenticity and trust online.
