TikTok Publishes 2024 Holiday Marketing Guide
26/08/2024As Meta continues to enhance its AI capabilities across its apps, it is also positioning itself as a leader in the broader AI field. The company has announced that it is open-sourcing its latest Llama AI models to encourage expanded development and foster greater collaboration.
Meta will release its Llama 3.1 40B and Llama 3.1 70B models, allowing developers to build their own AI systems using Meta’s established framework. This means developers won’t need to create their own front-end systems, as Meta’s Llama models are already trained on billions of parameters to interpret text queries.

As demonstrated in these examples, Meta’s Llama systems can support a range of AI applications. More specifically, by open-sourcing these models, Meta is allowing third-party developers to create their own systems using their own data, built on Meta’s tools.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced this on his Facebook page, presenting a 2,300-word overview explaining why he believes open-source AI models are the most effective path forward for both Meta and the technology itself.
According to Zuckerberg:
“Now you’ll be able to take the most advanced Llama models, continue training them with your own data, and then distill them down to a model of your optimal size – without us or anyone else seeing your data. We want to invest in the ecosystem that’s going to be the standard for the long term. Lots of people see that open source is advancing at a faster rate than closed models, and they want to build their systems on the architecture that will give them the greatest advantage long term.”
Zuckerberg believes that providing broader access to its AI models will promote more transparent, sustainable, and expansive AI projects.
And just to note, Zuckerberg still has strong criticisms of Apple, if you were curious.
“One of my formative experiences has been building our services constrained by what Apple will let us build on their platforms. Between the way they tax developers, the arbitrary rules they apply, and all the product innovations they block from shipping, it’s clear that Meta and many other companies would be freed up to build much better services for people if we could build the best versions of our products, and competitors were not able to constrain what we could build. On a philosophical level, this is a major reason why I believe so strongly in building open ecosystems in AI and AR/VR for the next generation of computing.”
Zuckerberg’s opposition to Apple plays a significant role in driving Meta’s development of open-source systems. It seems Apple’s strict rules, while often criticized, have inadvertently spurred innovation at other companies.
In addition, Zuckerberg mentions that Meta is collaborating with various major tech players, such as Amazon, Databricks, and Nvidia, to expand the AI ecosystem.
This approach reflects Meta’s long-term vision for AI technology, where current chatbot-style tools are seen as a precursor rather than an ultimate goal.
It’s important to frame Meta’s AI tools in this context. While the new Meta AI prompt at the top of each app might seem annoying to some and still has limited functionality, it serves a more significant role for new Facebook and Instagram users. For these newcomers, it represents an introduction to Meta’s broader metaverse vision. As these users grow, they will become key targets for Meta’s expansive metaverse plans, where AI will be crucial in enabling creation within virtual reality environments.
That would be a groundbreaking AI application. Picture putting on a Quest headset and speaking your dream scenario into vivid, realistic existence: “I want to experience life as a pirate on the seven seas,” “I want to feel what it’s like to be in a fighter plane during World War I,” “I want to be on stage performing for thousands of fans.”
If Meta can develop an AI system capable of transforming such scenarios into immersive, experiential realities, it could serve as a major leap forward in its metaverse ambitions.
The next generation may not even imagine a world where such AI-driven creation wasn’t possible at the command of their voice.
Currently, no other company is positioned to compete with Meta in this area, making open-sourcing its systems a strategic move rather than a risk. By opening up its technology, Meta is enhancing its AI ecosystem’s diversity and relevance in the market. If the metaverse evolves as envisioned, it will likely attract more creators back to Meta’s platforms to bring their ideas to life.
This is another long-term investment for Meta, which may not yield immediate results, but it is laying the groundwork for its future phases.
