LinkedIn Expands AI & Ad Targeting Data Use

LinkedIn has announced important changes to its Terms of Service, effective November 3, 2025, which expand how the platform uses member data for ad targeting and AI-powered features. While these updates may raise questions about privacy, they also open new opportunities for marketers to leverage LinkedIn more effectively in their campaigns.

What’s Changing on LinkedIn

The new terms include two key updates:

1. Expanded Ad Personalization via Microsoft

LinkedIn will now share more data with its parent company, Microsoft, to improve ad personalization across the Microsoft ecosystem.

• Shared data may include your LinkedIn profile info, feed activity, and ad engagement data.

• This does not include private messages or data restricted by your privacy settings.

• If you don’t opt out, you may see more Microsoft product ads tailored to your LinkedIn behavior.

Users can still opt out, but Microsoft ads will continue to appear—just less personalized.

2. AI Training with Member Data

In regions including the EEA, Hong Kong, Canada, Switzerland, and the U.K., LinkedIn will begin using certain member data to train its generative AI models.

• Data sources include profile details and public posts (but not private messages).

• These models aim to enhance features like content creation assistance, AI-powered messages, and recruitment tools.

• The setting is enabled by default, though members can turn it off under “Data for Generative AI Improvement” in their privacy settings.

Why This Matters for Brands

For marketers, these updates highlight two growing realities:

1. AI Is Reshaping Professional Networking
LinkedIn’s AI-driven features will help users write better posts, recruiters find talent more easily, and professionals optimize their profiles. For brands, this means higher-quality content and better targeting options to reach decision-makers.

2. More Precise Ad Targeting Across Platforms
With Microsoft integration, LinkedIn ad data can now inform cross-platform campaigns, meaning ads may follow users beyond LinkedIn itself. This could enhance campaign consistency, but also requires careful privacy-aware messaging to avoid audience fatigue.

3. Trust and Transparency Are Key
LinkedIn is built on professional credibility. Brands that respect user privacy while embracing AI-powered opportunities will maintain trust and stand out.

What Should Marketers Do?

• Audit Ad Strategies: Revisit your LinkedIn and Microsoft Ads integration to see how new personalization features can improve targeting.

• Experiment with AI Tools: Test LinkedIn’s generative AI for content creation and recruitment campaigns to increase efficiency.

• Communicate Responsibly: With data use in the spotlight, ensure your campaigns are transparent, relevant, and valuable to users.

• Stay Flexible: Privacy regulations and user sentiment vary by region. Tailor your strategy accordingly.

Final Thoughts

LinkedIn’s latest updates reflect a broader industry trend: AI and cross-platform data sharing are becoming standard in digital marketing. While users may have concerns about privacy, these changes also give brands more powerful tools to connect with audiences in meaningful ways.

For businesses, the takeaway is clear: embrace LinkedIn’s evolving ecosystem, but do so with strategic planning and ethical responsibility.
